Anita Shum

University of Sydney
Founder | Mini Mandarins

Anita founded Mini Mandarins in 2014 as principal, and curriculum director with the objective to help future generations build positive interests when learning Mandarin and lay a solid foundation on both language and cultural knowledge for non-native Mandarin learners.

Anita studied in Sydney Kambala Girls School, holds a bachelor’s degree in Business and a master’s degree in International Education at the University of Sydney, Australia.  She is also a general columnist in Hong Kong’s newspaper, the South China Morning Post, where she shares her insights on multilingualism and suggestions on nurturing emerging Chinese literacy.

Anita seeks new pedagogies, such as situational method and applies thematic role-play scenes closely related to life where a dedicated location (known as “Mini Metro”) is transformed into a supermarket, or a clinic, or a restaurant.   While students act out roles to explore the scenarios, they will discover “interesting” and “fun” elements as they learn to apply functional conversation and experience the language first-hand.
